Businesses have used Sun Tzu to great effectiveness, and you may be correct in saying that Alinsky closely mirrors Sun Tzu in several areas. However, there are stark differences. For example, you compare (“from THIS post”) Alinsky’s Rule #12 with Sun Tzu’s admonition to frustrate the enemy into error. Character destruction using propaganda-influenced popular opinion and a complicit media is far different from frustration. Sun Tzu is advising to find the enemy’s weak points– to “push his buttons,” so to speak–in order to force him into an error of judgment. Alinsky looked to fabricate, incriminate, and eliminate. Far different, in my opinion.

Rules for Radicals and The Art of War say practically THE SAME THINGS.

For example, from THIS post:

Sun Tsu: “Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.””

RfR: “Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.”

Sun Tsu: “If he is taking his ease, give him no rest.”

RfR “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.”

Sun Tsu: If your opponent [has a hot temper], seek to irritate him.

RfR: Pick the target,…personalize it, and polarize it.”

The rules for strategic action and “winning” are the same for all players. What Alinsky wrote is nothing new. Sun Tsu has been used extensively in business (and in many competitive arenas). Alinsky simply applied these same principles to (amateur)political activism. You can be sure that big business and politicians were already aware, and using, these tactics.
